When is grapefruit in season?
Pink grapefruit is available all year round but is even better in winter and spring when it’s juicier and sweeter. When looking for the juiciest ones, opt for fruits that feel heavy.
Why we love grapefruit
Named for the fact that the fruits grow in grape-like bunches, grapefruits are the largest citrus fruits, growing up to 18cm in diameter. They come in both seeded and seedless varieties, and, although the skins are always yellow (sometimes with a faint blush of pink), the flesh varies from yellowish white to pink and ruby red. Inside, the flesh is segmented like an orange, but the flavour is more tart. The bitter notes are delicious added to cocktails, in salads with salty cheese like halloumi and simmered into a sticky marmalade.
Health benefits of grapefruit
Grapefruits are a good source of fibre and vitamin C. They’re also high in antioxidants which help to protect cells in the body from potential damage. In particular, they’re a good source of beta-carotene, which is converted in the body to vitamin A.
